JOB SUMMARY:

BLM is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to join the team!

This position is located in Elko, Nevada Information can be found at Elko Area Chamber of Commerce.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

This position has been categorized as a Senior Firefighter (SFF), a key fire management position under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard, the selectee must meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. Provides technical and administrative supervision to hand crews.  Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjust short term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work. Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of the employees. Develops performance standards and evaluates work performance of subordinates. Gives advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters.

Specialized Experience Requirements:   
In order to be rated as qualified using specialized experience, we must be able to determine that you meet the definition(s) below - please be sure to include this information in your resume.  To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level of the position to be filled.   

For GS-06: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least GS-05 in the federal service, performing and leading others in wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, or prescribed burning; OR six months of graduate level college education related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to this position; OR equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.

For GS-07: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least GS-06 in the federal service, Experience performing, training, and supervising others in wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction or prescribed burning; OR one year of graduate level college education in a field related to range work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a field directly related to this position; OR an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education.  

If you are a current career seasonal employee, your time spent in non-pay status is not creditable towards meeting the specialized experience requirement of 52 weeks or 1 year (which ever is first).  Please include in your resume (on the first line of each job experience section), the dates you were placed in and out of pay status.

To qualify using education you will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit all of your college transcripts; a certificate of diploma can not be used to determine applicant qualification.  If your degree is from a Foreign Institution See Foreign Education.  

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement.

Selective Placement Factors:
This position requires a special qualifications that have been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element.  Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified.

1.  Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1);
2.  GS-6 Only - Single Resource Crew Boss (CRWB) or Trainee;
3.  GS-7 Only - Single Resource Crew Boss or higher;
4.  Type 5 Incident Commander (ICT5) or higher;
5.  Successful completion of S-290 "Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior"; and
6.  You must posess a current valid state drivers license.


This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.

The maximum entry-age for this position is 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran.

-If you have left Federal service and are over the age of 37, you must provide copies of SF50s showing beginning and ending dates of covered Federal law enforcement service or your will not be eligible for consideration under this vacancy announcement.

-If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement or your will not be eligible to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.

Passage of a pre-employment physical is required. You must also pass the work capacity test for arduous position.

THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION.  In accordance with Executive Order 12564, and under the Department's Drug Free Workplace Program.  Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment.  In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

KSA 1: Knowledge of supervisory policies, procedures, and methods.
KSA 2: Knowledge of strategies, tactics, and suppression methods used in containment and control of wildfires and wildland fires.
KSA 3: Knowledge of fire behavior including causes of wildland fire, influences of temperature, humidity, wind, topography, slope, and fuels.
KSA 4: Skill in coordinating training sessions and presenting wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire training material.

This is a seasonal appointment; you will be in a pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 9 months a year.  When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.
